CAD full form – Command Area Development : On December 1974, the command area development was started initially to the many factors like, to develop the irrigation potential utilization, optimize the agriculture production and productivity through integrated and coordinated approach to the management of efficient water. The ministry of water resource monitors and coordinates the implementation of CADWN and the Program is being implemented through the Command Area Development Authorities (CADAs) at the State level. Covering a cultural command area (CCA) of approx 15.00 million hectare, initially 60 major and medium irrigation projects wear taken up under the CAD  programme. After incorporation of new projects, deletion of completed projects and join up of some projects, there were 145 active projects with CCA of 16.02 mha, which eventually now covers CCA of22.16 million hectares spread over 23 States and 2 Union Territories. It was implemented as a State Sector Scheme during the XI (2008-09 to 2011-12) Five Year Plan.

The main objectives covered under the programme are:-

  • Bridge the gap between potential created and their utilization through micro level Infrastructure development and efficient farm water management practices.
  • Optimization of agricultural productivity & production, and
  • Improvement in socio-economic conditions of farmers
