Werner Herzog Has Written a World War II Novel

Movie director Werner Herzog (Aguirre, the Wrath of God Grizzly Male) has constantly stepped exterior the confines of film to pursue his inventive urges. As an actor, he’s popped up in The Mandalorian and Jack Reacher a shorter movie in which he ingests his own footwear to settle a wager, Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, is a sort of effectiveness art piece and he’s even available a MasterClass on filmmaking, in which he speculates on breaking the law if it usually means having a shot.

It’s not all that astonishing, then, to see that Herzog has moved to a new medium: novels. On Tuesday, the filmmaker releases his very first fiction book, The Twilight Earth ($23). The trim 144-page quantity imagines what daily life should have been like for Hiroo Onoda, a true Japanese soldier who was tasked with guarding the Philippine island of Lubang through Earth War II. Largely cut off from communications, Onoda and his little band of gentlemen considered the war persevered extensive just after its close in 1945 and invested many years patrolling the territory right up until he was eventually convinced the conflict was over in 1974. (Sporadic tries to inform him have been dismissed as the work of Allied brokers.)

Herzog promises to have met the serious Onoda while directing the opera Chushingura in Japan in 1997 the two spoke at size about his experiences. Herzog could relate, at minimum to some extent: He experienced spent significant time in the jungle to film Fitzcarraldo. The end result is the novel, which Herzog has claimed to be largely “factually correct” in its aspects but imagines Onoda’s internal existence. (Onoda died in 2014.)

A film about Onoda’s ordeals, Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle, was introduced in 2022 and was directed by Arthur Harari. The Twilight Environment is obtainable on Amazon.
