What exactly is a situationship

Where did it come from? - The TikTok generation are highly skilled at recognizing and naming phenomena that have always been around.

Situationships are nothing new -
A situationship is the very same. It might sound like some kind of new dating trend, but, really, we’ve all been there.

Undefined -
A situationship is usually left undefined. Words like boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner are not on the table, as they sound too serious and established for what this is.

Last-minute plans -
When you meet up with them, it’s usually arranged pretty last minute.

Superficial connection - While you might have fun and enjoy spending time together, there isn’t a deep emotional connection.

Based on convenience -
People in a situationship are unlikely to go out of their way to see each other and instead tend to make spur-of-the-moment plans when it’s convenient.

Not exclusive -
The exclusivity of the relationship probably hasn’t been discussed, and either one or both of you might be seeing other people.

Examples of situationships -
Situationships can develop for all sorts of reasons.

Meeting new people -
If you’ve just moved to a new city, using dating apps can be a great way to get to know more people quickly.

Sense of freedom -
Situationships allow you to enjoy a certain amount of connection and intimacy with another person while still feeling free and independent.

All of the fun, none of the work - As long as both partners are on the same page, it can be a great way to enjoy some of the benefits of being in a relationship.

Lack of stability -
It can be stressful to be in a relationship where there’s no consistency or stability.

The mental health impact -
If you’re in a situationship and it isn’t working for both of you, it can be detrimental to your mental health.

Low self-worth -
This type of situation can be born out of and exacerbate feelings of low self-worth.

Be honest -
Even if it’s scary, you need to be honest about your feelings and what your expectations are. Be honest both with yourself and with them.

Communicate your position -
Whether you're totally content to be in a situationship or feel that you need more, it’s important to communicate that clearly and as early as possible.
