NASDAQ the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. It was founded in 1976 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), The NASDAQ stock market began trading in 1971 and is the world’s first electronic stock market. It helped lower the spread (the difference between bid price and ask price) but was not quite popular among brokerages which made much of their money on the spread. It is the second largest stock exchange the world by market capitalization. NASDAQ joined with London Stock Exchange in 1992 to form the first intercontinental connection of securities market. It changed its status from a stock market to a licensed national securities exchange in the year 2006. A year later NASDAQ merged with OMX a leading exchange operator in the Nordic countries, expanded its global footprint and changed its name to the NASDAQ OMX Group.
