UNTAG – United Nations Transition Assistance Group

The United Nations Transition Assistance Group or UNTAG was a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force sent from the month April in 1989 till the month March in 1990 in Namibia to monitor the peace procedure and elections there. Namibia had been involved by South Africa since the year 1915, first under a League of Nations was mandatory and later on, illegally. Since 1966, the forces of South African had been combating an insurgency by the People of Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), the other organization of military wing of the Namibian-nationalist is South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO). In 1978, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 435, which set out a plan for elections administered by South Africa yet under UN supervision and control after a truce. However, in 1988 there were only the two parties able to agree to a ceasefire. As UNTAG started to deploy peacekeepers, observers of military, police, and political workers, hostilities were briefly restored on the day the progress procedure was supposed to begin.
