CSIR: – Council of Scientific and Industrial Research

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) is an autonomous research and development (R&D) organization known for its revolutionary R&D knowledgebase in diverse S&T areas. Established by the British government in 1942, CSIR is an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India. CSIR has an exceptional network of 38 laboratories, 3 Innovation Complexes, 39 outreach centres and 5 units throughout India.  With the collective strength of about 4600 active scientists supported by about 8000 scientific and technical personnel, CSIR covers a wide spectrum of science and technology, and pioneers India’s intellectual property movement.

The R&D activities of CSIR include includes Astrophysics, aeronautics, structural engineering, ocean sciences, biotechnology and nanotechnology, metallurgy, chemicals, geophysics, genomics, petroleum, leather, environmental engineering, to name a few. The Scimago Institutions Ranking World Report stated that CSIR is the only Indian organization among the top 100 global institutions. CSIR holds 84th rank globally, 17th rank in Asia and leads the country at the first position. Every year CSIR files about 250 Indian patents and 200 foreign patents on an average. Almost 13 % of CSIR patents are licensed which is above the global average. CSIR is a leader in terms of filing and securing patents worldwide amongst its peers in publicly funded research organizations in the world.
