NICD:- National Institute of Communicable Diseases

NICD stands for National Institute of Communicable Diseases. It was renamed to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the year 2008. It was known as National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) from the year 1963 to 2008. Before this, it was known as the Central Malaria Bureau from the year 1909 to 1963. It is headquartered in Sham Nath Marg in New Delhi.

It is a part of the Indian Directorate General of Health Services. It was established in July 1963. Its aim was to conduct research in epidemiology and control of communicable diseases. It also reorganized the activities of the Malaria Institute of India (MII). It now has a total of eight branches at Alwar, Bangalore, Calicut, Jagdalpur, Trivandrum, Patna, Rajahmundry, Coonoor, and Varanasi. These branches advise their respective state governments on issues related to public health. It is a part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
