An interjection is a mean of expression emotions during a speech or conversation. It can be a slight pause or exclamations.
It has some of the following features that make them unique:
- Interjections aren’t usually meaningful in sentence structure.
- They are exclamations that have no link to the rest of the sentences.
- They are abrupt so we cannot modify them.
- Interjections express the mood of the conversation.
Interjections are mainly used during verbal communication, they are sudden expressions that we might show in order to express our feelings or emotions, at times those words might not even make sense. It is inappropriate to use interjections during formal communication.
Four Roles of interjection:
Role 1: Interjection express someone’s emotions, feelings of empathy or a mood. Some words that we use in our daily routine but we do not use them informal conversations can also be considered as interjections.
Example:
- Yay! We have won the game.
- Oh! Did you fail your exams again?
- Nice! This is exactly how I wanted my painting to look like.
Role 2: Often we used expressions in the middle of a sentence to grab somebody’s attention or to interrupt the speech.
Examples:
- I uhh, forgot to bring your charger back.
- Erm, I hope I did not disturb you.
Role 3: Use of interjections in agreement or disagreement.
Examples:
- Nope! I’m not hungry at the moment.
- Yeah! That’s fine with me.
Role 4: To seek someone’s attention.
Examples:
- Excuse me! Can you move aside?
- Ehm! That’s my pen.
Apart from the examples and roles mentioned above, there are various other forms of our expressions or moods where we can use interjections.
